The Queen Elizabeth II Royal Mail Woodland is a 9 hectare newly planted woodland for and on behalf of the Queen’s Green Canopy. It is also a key part of the larger Bold Forest Park regeneration on Merseyside, meeting the needs for health and well-being, play and education.

This is a community woodland which members of the public will have access to and will be able to use it for a variety of purposes. The benefit of trees to people is widely reported so it will be an important and impactful public asset. Within this Queen Elizabeth II Royal Mail Woodland, we are creating the story for all visitors to the woodland to follow: about the creation of the Queen’s Green Canopy for her Late Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, how throughout Her reign, Her Late Majesty planted more than 1,500 trees all over the world and how Her Late Majesty spoke of the importance of trees in the Earth’s future. And why people all over the UK were invited to “Plant a tree for the Jubilee” to create a legacy in honour of Her late Majesty’s leadership of the nation, to benefit future generations.

Royal Mail acquired the land and planted it on behalf of and as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Project in 2023, following acquisition of the site by Royal Mail and with funding for the planting also coming from Defra’s Nature for Climate Fund and the Local Authorities.

Much of the planting work has been by Mersey Trust with support from a charity, a veterans organisation supporting serving and former personnel suffering from some form of PTSD or Service leavers suffering from stress and anxiety when transitioning from the service. They offered these individuals the opportunity to get involved in Nature Based Therapy, which has proven to have a positive effect on mental health, and they have been fully involved with creating this new woodland. As have local St. Helens Willow Tree Primary School children who came along to join the tree planting and as a lasting legacy have their names associated with the trees they have planted.

The Queen Elizabeth II Royal Mail Woodland will be declared open on Wednesday 12th March 2025 by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mr. Mark FW Blundell and in the presence of Sir Nicholas Bacon KCVO, OBE, DL Chairman of the Queens Green Canopy, Mr Geraint Richards, MVO, FICFor, Head Forester to the Duchy of Cornwall and to His Majesty The King and a guest list of invited Dignitaries coming together to celebrate this Queen’s Green Canopy woodland created for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and also to celebrate all the amazing tree planting for the Queen’s Green Canopy that has taken place on Merseyside during the 3 years since the QGC launch.

Royal Mail is the original postal service. For over 500 years we have taken the long view and continuously reinvented ourselves for the next generations. As the Founding Platinum Supporter of The Queen’s Green Canopy, Royal Mail is incredibly proud to support this inspiring project which is doing just that; creating a greener environment healthier and even more beautiful United Kingdom for the generations to come. As part of this support we have planted four amazing wonderful indigenous trees, one at a selected Royal Mail site in each UK nation, in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and for everyone to enjoy the enjoyment of all for many years to come.
