Why looking after you is just as important as looking after your business

When I first started out, I believed that if I just worked a little harder, stayed up a little later and said yes a little more, everything would fall into place. What I learned, sometimes the hard way, is that a business can only ever be as healthy as the person behind it. Looking after yourself is not a nice-to-have. It is one of the absolute foundations of long-term success.
Here are some of the things I know to be true…
Â
1. You are the heartbeat of your business
Your ideas, your passion and your resilience are what bring your business to life. I often liken it to being the ‘Duracell battery’ of your company. When you feel supported and energised, everything flows more easily. When you are running on empty, even simple decisions can feel overwhelming. Putting yourself first from time to time is not selfish. It is essential. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Â
2. Constant busyness is not the same as progress
There is a temptation to believe that success comes from doing more and more. In reality, some of the best ideas arrive when you slow down. Rest gives you perspective. It allows creativity to return and for confidence to rebuild.
Â
3. Balance is allowed to change
What balance looks like will shift as your life and business evolve. There is no single right way to do this. The important thing is to keep checking in with yourself and giving yourself permission to adjust when something no longer feels right.
Â
4. Small changes can be powerful
Looking after yourself does not require a dramatic change. It might be taking a proper lunch break, finishing a little earlier once a week or asking for help when you need it. These small moments of care add up over time and can be more beneficial than you might ever imagine.
Â
5. When you feel better, your business benefits
Your wellbeing shapes how you lead, how you communicate and how you show up. A business built with care and kindness starts with offering those things to yourself.
Your business matters, but so do you. When you look after yourself alongside your work, you are not stepping away from ambition. You are creating the space and strength needed to keep going, and to enjoy the journey as much as the destination and ultimately, isn’t that what life’s about?!
