Royal Mail Pending Notification
When you’re tracking a parcel being delivered by Royal Mail, getting a ‘Pending’ status can be confusing. Here’s what a ‘Pending’ message means, why it occurs, and how to move proceed if your mail remains in this state.
What does ‘Pending’ mean in Royal Mail Tracking?
A 'Pending' status shows that Royal Mail recognises your mail’s tracking number, but no scanned data has been recorded in our system yet. This typically means the parcel hasn't been scanned into our network. It’s important to note that 'Pending' doesn't necessarily signify a problem; it often reflects the early stages of your parcel's journey.
A 'Pending' status in your parcel or letter’s delivery is common and usually indicates that the parcel is in the early stages of its journey or awaiting processing. By understanding the reasons behind this status and taking appropriate steps, you can stay informed about your parcel's progress and address any potential issues if they arise.
Common reasons for a ‘Pending’ status
Several factors can contribute to a parcel displaying a 'Pending' status:
-
Awaiting an initial scan: The sender may have created a shipping label, but the parcel hasn't been handed over to us or scanned at a facility yet.
-
System delays: There might be delays in updating the tracking information, especially during peak times or due to technical issues.
-
Label issues: If the shipping label is damaged, illegible or detached, it can prevent the parcel from being scanned properly.
-
Incorrect address: An incomplete or incorrect address can cause delays in processing and scanning your parcel.
-
International shipments: Parcels coming from abroad may experience longer processing times before entering our system, resulting in a longer-than-usual 'Pending' status.
Where is my parcel during the ‘Pending’ phase?
While the exact location of your mail can't be determined during the 'Pending' phase, the parcel is likely to be:
-
With the sender: The parcel may still be in the sender's possession, awaiting dispatch.
-
In transit to Royal Mail: The parcel could be en route to a Royal Mail facility but hasn't been scanned in yet.
-
At a Royal Mail facility: The parcel might have arrived at a facility but it’s awaiting processing and scanning.
What Does a ‘Pending’ tracking status mean after a missed delivery?
A 'Pending' status indicates that our systems recognise the tracking number, but no new scan data has been recorded in our system since the last update.
If you see that your parcel is ‘Pending’ after a failed delivery, it’s likely in one of the following locations:
-
The parcel is awaiting redelivery or collection: The parcel is likely held at your local Royal Mail delivery office, awaiting collection or redelivery instructions.
-
The parcel is being returned to the sender: If the parcel isn't collected or redelivery isn't arranged within the holding period, Royal Mail may return it to the sender. The tracking status might still show as 'Pending' during this process until it's scanned and returned to the sender's location.
How long do Royal Mail hold onto parcels after a missed delivery?
After a missed delivery, we usually hold the item at your local delivery office for up to 18 days. During this time, the tracking status may remain as 'Pending' until the parcel is either collected, redelivered, or returned to the sender.
If the holding period has passed without you collecting your parcel or a redelivery arrangement, the parcel may be on its way back to the sender. In cases where the sender's details are missing or unclear, the parcel might be sent to the Royal Mail National Returns Centre for further investigation.
What to do when your mail is ‘Pending’:
If your parcel remains in 'Pending' status for an extended period:
-
Contact the sender: Confirm that the parcel has been dispatched and inquire about any available proof of postage.
-
Wait for updates: Allow some time for the parcel to be scanned into the system, especially if it's been recently dispatched or there’s been a recent missed delivery
-
Contact us for help: If the status doesn't update after a reasonable length of time, consider contacting us directly for assistance.
