To commemorate the Centenary and pay tribute to those who served in the War and made the ultimate sacrifice, Royal Mail Group has created a searchable database of all known memorials in our care.

The GPO released over 75,000 employees to fight in the War, including 12,000 men who fought with its own regiment, the Post Office Rifles. Their bravery, tenacity and character is well documented and earned the regiment high praise and a prestigious place in British military history. In fact, at least four of our former employees are known to have been Victoria Cross recipients, for valour "in the face of the enemy": Sgt Alfred Knight, Sgt Albert Gill, Major Henry Kelly, and Sgt John Hogan. The GPO also became one of the largest employers of women at the time, as tens of thousands were recruited to help keep the organisation running.

Visit The Postal Museum website for more information about Royal Mail Group’s links with the First World War.

Through this database, we aim to pay tribute to those who served in the First World War and safeguard the memorials established to preserve their memory.

There are many other memorials which pay tribute to fallen postal workers located across the UK and abroad. In some cases, our people will be named on more than one memorial. This site features only those in our custody. To find information about other memorials, please visit www.ukniwm.org.uk.
