Introducing Dainty Rocks:
uncovering a hidden gem

What starts as a creative outlet can sometimes become something much bigger. For Diane, founder of Dainty Rocks, it began with making her own wedding jewellery. Years later, that passion project has grown into a thriving personalised jewellery business.

Like many small business owners, Diane’s journey was not perfectly planned from day one. It evolved gradually through creativity, resilience and learning on the go. Her story is a reminder that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. Sometimes, taking that first step is what matters the most.

From navigating family life to finding the tools that saved time and built customer confidence, Diane shares the lessons she learned, and the role Royal Mail played in supporting her journey.

A sparkling beginning – how Dainty Rocks started

Dainty Rocks started very simply. Diane made her own wedding jewellery and realised how much she loved creating personalised pieces. ‘Over time, it became more personal,’ she explains. ‘After becoming a mum and losing my own mum in the same year, I wanted jewellery that meant something, not just something to wear.’

That emotional connection became the foundation of the brand. Rather than focusing purely on trends, Dainty Rocks centres around meaningful jewellery that represents relationships, memories and milestones. ‘What I was making started to reflect real relationships and memories, and that’s what people connected with.’

From passion project to brilliant business

For Diane, the move from side project to established business happened gradually. ‘It crept up on me,’ she says. ‘Orders started coming in more regularly and I realised I couldn’t keep working off the kitchen table.’

She decided to take the leap and move into a small business unit. But almost immediately, COVID hit.

‘Everything stopped overnight. My son was home from school, suppliers were closing, orders dried up, and it felt like I had made completely the wrong decision.’

Then something changed. People started actively supporting small businesses, and personalised gifts became a way for families and friends to stay connected while apart. For Diane, personal moments of reassurance mattered at that time too.

‘My Royal Mail collection driver was a happy face at the end of the day, taking those gifts to the next part of the journey.’

Crafting a brand with meaning

One of the biggest challenges early on was visibility. ‘Making the jewellery was the easy part,’ Diane says. ‘Working out how to get people to actually find it online was much harder.’ She learned through trial and error, testing titles, keywords and photography to better understand what customers responded to.

Today, Dainty Rocks is known for meaningful, personalised jewellery and thoughtful service. Customers appreciate the ability to tailor pieces, adjust sizing and even add to jewellery collections as families grow. ‘Meaning is the biggest thing,’ Diane explains. ‘The jewellery represents people, children, partners, even pets.’

But that meaning is lost if the items don’t arrive in time to mark those special moments. That’s why speed and flexibility have also become an important part of the brand experience.

Balancing business with daily life

Running a business alone means wearing a lot of hats. Alongside making jewellery, Diane also manages marketing, customer service, packaging and logistics.

‘Customer service takes up a lot of time because everything is made to order,’ she explains. ‘There are always questions about sizing, personalisation and delivery.’

To stay organised, she batches tasks together. ‘Making, packaging and posting are grouped together, and messages and marketing are handled separately.’

Like many small business owners, she has also had to learn how to adapt to challenges outside her control, including fluctuating silver prices and balancing work around family life. ‘I have had to get very structured with my time and also accept that some days just will not go to plan.’

How Royal Mail helped

For Dainty Rocks, reliable delivery plays a huge role in customer trust. ‘A lot of customers are buying close to a deadline and want reassurance it will arrive in time,’ Diane says.

Tracked services have been especially important as the business has grown. ‘Tracked 24 has probably been the biggest game changer for me as both a buyer and a seller. It’s fast, reliable and gives customers confidence to place an order even when they have left it a bit late.’

She also values the speed, flexibility and consistency of Royal Mail’s services, which helps remove stress from the day-to-day running of the business. ‘People often need gifts quickly, so I do my best to help get them out of sticky situations!’

‘Having consistent services I can rely on means I can focus on making and running the business, rather than worrying about what happens after it leaves me.’

Royal Mail’s SME Hub has also become a go-to resource for support and inspiration. ‘The Royal Mail SME Hub has been an amazing source for hints, tips and hacks to help me run my business. I love watching the videos of other businesses. They are all very inspiring!’

Advice from one small business owner to another

When asked what advice she would give to someone thinking about turning a hobby into a business, Diane’s answer is simple: ‘Start before you feel ready. It will never feel perfect. Focus on learning quickly. Pay attention to what customers respond to and build from that.’

She also encourages new business owners to keep things simple where possible, especially when it comes to delivery and logistics.

‘Having a reliable delivery set-up from the beginning takes away a lot of stress and helps you look more established straight away.’ And while there will always be challenges, Diane believes ambition matters more than perfection. ‘Thinking big will help you grow.’

What’s next for Dainty Rocks?

Looking to the future, Dainty Rocks is refining what customers already love, while introducing even more bespoke options. ‘I am now focusing on adding more engraving alongside hand stamping,’ Diane says.

At the same time, she wants to continue adapting to changes in online retail while protecting the handmade, personal feel that makes the brand special. ‘Things change quickly in online business, so being able to adjust while keeping that handmade personal feel is key.’

Conclusion

One of the most rewarding parts of the journey for Diane has been hearing directly from customers.

‘When someone tells you the recipient cried, or explains what the piece represents, it reminds you that what you are making actually matters to someone.’

For anyone sitting on a passion project and wondering whether to take the leap, her story is proof that small beginnings can grow into something meaningful.
