Dream dabble do: how to turn your side hustle into a business
By Holly Tucker, founder of Holly & Co
When I first launched Holly & Co ‘Dream dabble do’ was our mantra to encourage others to set up their own small business. And if you’re thinking of turning your side hustle into a full-time affair, it’s likely you’ve already done the first two. Perhaps you’ve got to the stage of the creative juggle — where trying to fit in making, crafting or delivering a service around another job or demand on your precious minutes is becoming challenging. Maybe you’re just ready.
So what if this is the right time to acknowledge the calling: if you’re reading this and the little voice telling you “This could be something” is getting louder. This is about owning your creativity, believing it’s worthy of the spotlight and getting serious about turning your passion into purpose. That shift will unlock everything else. So let me share some real advice, inspiration and even a gentle nudge towards saying “yes” to yourself. Are you ready?
A passion project or a purposeful business: what’s the difference?
I truly believe that the greatest difference between a side hustle and a business is your mindset: a side hustle feels like a secret, a ‘when I’ve got time’ hobby. A business? That’s ownership. That’s saying I believe in this. So do you believe in it? There’s really nothing to be nervous about. Turning pro isn’t about losing creativity or even the enjoyment of ‘doing the thing’ — it’s about giving it space to grow. It’s about allowing yourself to have that evolution and growth mindset, too. Before anything else, you’ve got to start seeing yourself as a business owner — not just someone with a “little thing on the side.” So where should you begin?
Be brave and make the leap — just start
You don’t need a fancy office, you need a first sale. You don’t need an MBA, you need a ‘why’. And you don’t need to worry about not being business-y enough, you just need to start a business. The majority of creatives I’ve met already have the key strengths required to run a business: problem solving, storytelling, resilience, vision… Now it’s just about filling the gaps like the financial or legal knowledge you might need along the way, for example. Build yourself a small ‘kitchen table boardroom’ and break it down into steps. One of the greatest mistakes I see is people trying to get from A-Z without going through the rest of the alphabet first. You don’t need to get to Z. You just need to make it to B. Start there. The rest comes later. Celebrate the beauty of building. Test ideas, gather feedback and iterate with love. I’ll let you into a secret, that’s pretty much still how I work today.
Evolve your brand and let is shine
Yes, you need all the good stuff if this is going to be ‘a thing’ — a logo, colour palette, a consistent voice and all of that — but most of all, your business needs a HEART. It’s the reason you’re here, your values and the way you make people feel. This is your ‘why’. Why are you doing this? Who are you doing it for? What difference do you want to make in the world? Having a clear purpose will guide your decisions, keep you grounded and help your audience connect with you on a deeper level and believe me, that is everything. Think about how you want your business to show up in the world. Be authentic. Be consistent. Be brave enough to be different — because that’s what people fall in love with. Your story is your superpower.
Sort the practical bits (without losing the magic)
The grown-up bits just need doing: register the business, set up a separate bank account, look at your cashflow, figure out your pricing, register for tax or what-have-you but make friends with finance. Think of money as being fuel for your mission rather than something to be shy about… And the main thing with all of this is, don’t panic. It doesn’t all have to happen overnight and remember: systems and process = freedom for your creativity to flourish.
That’s why I highly recommend getting any third-party services you might need in place before you start, as your future self will really thank you for the saved time and energy! In terms of delivery for example, Royal Mail offers all kinds of scalable solutions. There’s the ability to avoid postal queues by dropping your packages off at a Parcel Locker or Parcelshop for example and just printing labels off there and then — or using their Tracked service, which means you’ll be able to track customer parcels from each delivery point (super handy). Essentially, you’ll find you are never ‘too small’ to make the most of these, and they can help you become more efficient from the get-go.
Remember, your community is your strength
You don’t have to do this alone — find your people. From joining creative communities or networking (yes, even if you're an introvert!), to finding a business buddy, this support will prove to be invaluable to you. I always encourage people to make friends not contacts, but connections (either online or in real life) can lead to opportunities, collaborations and sanity (trust me)!
And finally, a quick ‘Holly pep-talk’!
If you’ve read this far and are tingling a little, go and look in the mirror right now and repeat these words. “I am exactly the kind of person who can do this.” and ‘Today, I am founding a business and it is going to be exceptional.” And then do all you can to make that so. Because if you’re waiting for permission, this is it! Dare to be perfectly imperfect. Mess it up the first time (that’s where the gold is). The more you learn along the way, the stronger your business will become. It’s better to start messy than wait forever so just get going. And don’t forget, every sale is someone saying yes to your dream — and that’s a pretty powerful feeling. I wish you everything and I truly hope you fly.
