Royal Mail's Sustainable Mail™

Sustainable Mail™ is our new standard in responsible mailing. We will have a range of products which can make your direct marketing activities more environmentally-friendly and sustainable in the future.

Mailsort® 120 and 700 and Mailsort® 1400 were the first Royal Mail products to offer a sustainable option. We now have a sustainable specification available for Door to Door. We are in the process of exploring how we can extend sustainable solutions to our other bulk mail products.

Setting the standard

Together with ISBA, Acxiom and the DMA, we’ve been working with BSI British Standards to develop a new environmental standard for direct marketing called PAS 2020, which was launched in January 2009.

Our Sustainable Mail™ specification has been aligned to PAS 2020 and gives you guidance on how to prepare your mail to have least environmental impact.

There are two levels in our specification: entry level and intermediate level. These will evolve over time to reflect changing capabilities of local authorities to recycle material, as well as technological developments in the industry. Changes to the product specification will be linked to changes to the PAS 2020 specification, which will be reviewed at least every two years. You will be given at least three months notice of any changes to the specification. Please note that a change has been made to the specification. Brown cardboard is now accepted by local authorities which means that it has been removed from the intermediate level of the specification and will be accepted.
