What you can do

Achieve PAS 2020

We’re committed to implementing responsible practices across our business. Environmental issues are central to our future vision - and these need to be addressed by our whole industry.

Together with ISBA, Acxiom and the DMA, we’ve been working with BSI British Standards to develop a new environmental standard for direct marketing called PAS 2020 – and we’d like to help you achieve the same standards for your mailings.

Launched in January 2009, PAS focuses on establishing a set of environmental objectives, performance levels and indicators for different environmental aspects of a Direct Mail campaign. The indicators measure a campaign’s impact on issues such as climate change. They can be used by clients and suppliers to demonstrate a commitment to more responsible business practices.

PAS 2020 will be updated and reviewed at least every two years to reflect changes in practice and the emergence of greater understanding, particularly surrounding newer technologies and the level of greenhouse gas emissions associated with direct marketing.

Adopt Sustainable Mail™ practices

Available from April 6th 2009, Sustainable Mail™ will help you minimise the environmental impact of your mailing and demonstrate your commitment to good environmental practices. Our Sustainable Mail™ specification has been aligned to PAS 2020 and gives you guidance on how to prepare your mail to have least environmental impact.

Mailsort® 120 and 700 and Mailsort® 1400 were the first Royal Mail products to offer a sustainable option. Sustainable Mail is also now available for Door to Door unaddressed mail. We are in the process of exploring how we can extend sustainable solutions to our other bulk mail products.
