Royal Mail has recognised a desire from a number of customers to increase the volume of mail presented in trays. To this end Royal Mail has undertaken a design project to develop revised processes and product specifications which will remove some of the barriers to presenting mail in trays. This trial will aid that project to determine if extending the ability to use trays is appropriate to Mailsort 1400 and Mailsort 700 for mailings of 150k items and over. It is also our intention to extend the trial to cover large letter format.
The objectives of the trial are, amongst other things, to:
- Quantify the benefits that an increased use of trays brings to customers.
- To log issues that customers experience with mailing Mailsort mailings in trays.
- Test the effectiveness of the existing container ordering and supply process.
- Measure the impact of handling increased volumes of Mailsort mailings in trays, Yorks and Rigid Steel Containers (RSCs) within Regional Distribution Centres (RDCs).
- To quantify the network costs associated with the increased use of trays, Yorks and Rigid Steel Containers (RSCs).
- To quantify the Network costs driven by changes in transport utilisation associated with Mailsort presentation in trays.
If successful the trial will be followed by a relaxation of the current rules as to when trays may be used. Three months notice will be given, as required by Condition 7 of Royal Mail’s Licence.
Customers who signed up to the trial prior to 10th July 2009 and who agreed that their details may be passed to our Regulator may continue to use trays (as notified) in the period post trial and pre full launch. Customers who signed up after 10th July must discontinue using the trays when the trial is complete.
We are seeking trial participants across the UK.
We anticipate that this product will remove some of the existing barriers to using trays and is part of our continuing drive to ensure that we are easy to do business with.
Royal Mail will acknowledge your application and respond to you with a short questionnaire.
