What if I need to change my postage details?
Your postage details are all the information you entered in our Price Finder, including the destination category (UK, Overseas or HM Forces) and the various aspects of the service: delivery time, compensation (where applicable), tracking (where applicable), item weight and postage price.
Online Postage gives you two opportunities to change your postage details, one before you choose your payment method, and one before you confirm your order. Choosing to make changes to your service at either of these points will take you back to the Price Finder, where you’ll be able to change the service you’ve chosen in any way you need to. You can also use the ‘Back’ button on the first page of Online Postage to return to the Price Finder and make changes in the same way.

What if I haven’t entered the correct weight?
First, and most importantly, if you’ve only made a guess at your item’s weight, then the price we’ve quoted for sending it can only be seen as an estimate. You shouldn’t buy postage based solely on an estimate like this. If the postage amount is wrong, it could result in problems with your delivery, or it could mean you pay too much.
The only way to be sure of your item’s weight is to weigh it. If you can’t weigh it at home, you can weigh it at your nearest Post Office™.
That said, the Comparison Guide below gives reliable weights for many items. For items that are heavier than 200g and all other items you’re not sure of, the guide is only useful for rough price estimates. Again, do not use these estimates to buy postage online.
Remember that if your item is too large to go through a letterbox, you’ll need to post it at the Post Office™ anyway, and you will be able to weigh it there.
Weight Comparison Guide
| Letter or greeting card | 30g | | Standard DL envelope with 4 sheets of A4 | 44g | | Compact disc in bubble envelope | 130g | | A4 envelope with 20 sheets of A4 | 160g | | Mobile phone in bubble envelope | 180g | | DVD in bubble envelope | 190g | | Video cassette in bubble envelope | 295g | | 400 page paperback book in bubble envelope | 310g | | Pair of jeans | 500g | | Glossy magazine in bubble envelope | 585g |

What is a return address and do I have to include one?
A return address is the sender’s own address – usually either your home address if you’re sending from home or your company address if you’re sending from work.
You’re not obliged to include a return address with a postal item, but it’s in your own interest. If your item can’t for any reason be delivered, your return address will allow us to send it back to you, so it won’t be lost.

What is the difference between a flat number and a property number?
A flat number is simply the number of an individual flat within a property. You usually wouldn’t use it without also including a property number or property name. Flat numbers can also be letters of the alphabet.
A property number is the number a postman uses to identify the building an item is being sent to. It’s also known as the street number.
Examples:
Flat A, [flat number] 78 [property number] Northumberland Road Prestwich
Flat 7, [flat number] Knowle House, [property name] North Road, Sheffield

I would like to make sure my item has arrived at its destination. Does Online Postage offer that service?
You can link into any of our Royal Mail tracked products, such as Special Delivery™. You can print off the required forms and pay for the item via Online Postage but you must still take the item to a Post Office™ to have it accepted into our network. For example, if you have purchased Special Delivery™, you or the recipient will then be able to track the item through our network to point of delivery. For these tracked services a copy of the signature given upon delivery can be viewed online for free.
