Have I got what it takes? What we look for in our apprentices.

We’re looking for the most suitable candidates to become Royal Mail Apprentices, and it’s important that you have a good think about your suitability for the Scheme (and the Scheme’s suitability for you) before you decide to apply. The following questions should help you decide:

Find out if you are eligible

  • I am a British National or have been residing in UK for more than 3 years
  • I do not have a degree
  • I am not involved in any government-funded initiative

If all of the above statements apply to you, then you are eligible to join Royal Mail’s Apprentice Scheme.

If any of the above statements do not apply to you, then you are not eligible to apply to join Royal Mail’s Apprentice Scheme.

If you are not eligible for our Apprentice Scheme, we may still have opportunities at Royal Mail that you may be interested in – just click here to find out about other job opportunities.

Find out if you are ready, willing and able

Are you:

  • prepared to remain on Royal Mail’s Apprentice Scheme for 18 months?  (By joining Royal Mail’s Apprentice Scheme you are committing to remain on the scheme for 18months)
  • able to be flexible and move location?  (You will have to work at different locations within the same geographical area during the 18 months of the Apprentice scheme)
  • able to travel to work at times when public transport may not be available?
  • able to travel to different work locations?
  • able to work both early in the morning (6am-2pm) and late in the evening (2pm-10pm)?  (As part of the apprentice programme you will have to work on both type of shifts over the 18 months)
  • able to attend daytime learning sessions?  (Training may not always coincide with your shift so you may have to attend training during the day)
  • prepared to complete a Level 2 NVQ? (This will involve completing work-based assignments, writing up what you have done and having your work assessed)
  • willing to spend some of your own time outside of work, on your NVQ?
  • willing to put in extra effort to develop your long-term career within Royal Mail?
  •  physically fit and able to lift heavy bags?
  •  prepared to work outside whatever the weather?
  •  willing to do repetitive work? (For example, sorting letters every day)
  •  happy to talk to others and help solve customers’ problems?
  •  prepared to wear a uniform?

If you answered ‘yes’ to all of these questions, you sound like just the kind of person we are looking for. You can read about our application process  or you can apply right now.  Good Luck!

If you answered ‘no’ to any of the questions, go back and think about what you would have to do to answer ‘yes’.  If your answer is still ‘no’ then the apprentice scheme is probably not suitable for you. Alternatively, you can browse our other opportunities at Royal Mail
