The Door to Door process

  • Step 1 - Make your booking

Making your booking is easy and can be done up to two years in advance so that you can make door drops an integral part of your marketing plan. However, it’s always best to book as early as possible to ensure you get the areas you want. We can help you select your most profitable areas using our free online mapping and targeting service (new window), or the more in-depth geo-demographic targeting service which will help your campaign reach your ideal customers. Don’t forget to download and read our list of conditions before making your booking so that you’re fully familiar with our specifications.

  • Step 2 – Create your sample and send to us

Once you have a mock up of your campaign material designed and printed please send a copy to us for review at least 30 days before your campaign is booked in to be delivered. Our Print Assist product can print and deliver your leaflets into our distribution centres making the process easier for you to manage. You need to ensure leaflets follow our size guide of:

    • Minimum size 70 x 100mm
    • Maximum size 297 x 210mm (A4)
    • Maximum thickness 17mm
    • Maximum weight 100g (only one 80-100g item can be accepted for each postcode sector per week).
    • You can fold larger items as long as they’re posted within these sizes.
    • You can exceed the maximum size for an extra charge, however each item can be no thicker than 17mm once folded.
  • Step 3 – Package your material into boxes, bundles or pallets

Bundle your leaflets, catalogues, brochures or coupons in equal quantities of 500 items or less per bundle, ensuring they’re secure and do not exceed 6.4kg. Place the bundles into boxes, ensuring that all items in the box are of the same weight and that the box does not exceed 10kg in weight. If required, these boxes should be placed onto pallets which should:

    • Not exceed 1.0m x 1.2m x 1.3m high, weigh no more than 1,000kg loaded (including the pallet) and conform to European Health and Safety standards.
    • Ensure all items in bundles, boxes or pallets are for the same delivery period, and that items on pallets are securely contained and shrink wrapped.
    • If items from different contracts are on pallets use vertical dividers to clearly separate them and clearly identify which items belong to which contract.
  • Step 4 – Label your bundles, boxes and pallets

Please label your bundles, boxes and pallets with the following information:

    • "Royal Mail Door to Door"
    • Your business name (and/or client name if you are an agency)
    • Royal Mail Address (where the items will be handed over)
    • Delivery date of distribution (this is the start date of delivery to households, rather than the date that you gave your items to Royal Mail for distribution)
    • Distribution number (See our FAQs)
    • Leaflet design number
    • Number of items per bundle, and the number of boxes.

Please use the label design provided. For an example of the label, please refer to our User guide

  • Step 5 – Deliver you items to your nearest distribution centre

You will need to deliver your items to one or more Royal Mail Door to Door Distribution centres (walk bundling centre) between seven and eighteen days before your distribution date.

You can pre-book your handover by phoning 01865 796981 – this enables you to choose the best time to do this. When we give you your contract, we will also give you a ‘proof of delivery’ sheet which you will need to bring with you each time you hand over your items to a walk bundling centre, so that one of our team can sign it as proof that you delivered the items to us.
