Going online is great fun, but it can also be dangerous. So please follow these six useful tips and make sure you never get into any problems.

People might not be who they say they are.
If you log on to any chat rooms or message boards, always remember you never know exactly who you're talking to.
And if you join a new message board or chat room, make sure you tell a trusted adult about it.

Keep all your details secret - name, nicknames, address, mobile number, email address, where you go to school, even your friends' names - as people can use these to contact you. |

And if you create an online screen name or nickname, never use your real name. Try not to use things that are easy to guess like your parent's name or a pet's name.
If anything you read in a chat room or message board upsets or worries you, always tell an adult straight away. Or if the site you're on has an 'alert button' or an email address where you can tell the 'host', use it as soon as you feel something's wrong.
And remember, you always have the choice of logging off at any time.
Delete any emails from people or companies that you don’t know. If you do open an email that has things or images in it that make you feel uncomfortable, tell a trusted adult straight away - and don’t reply to it.

Never arrange to meet someone you meet online by yourself, no matter how well you think you know the other person or however curious you may be.
If you really do want to meet up, make sure you always take a trusted adult with you.
